Homeowners should schedule an AC tune-up every spring. Here are five of the reasons why.
1. Check Your HVAC Filter
Your technician will examine your HVAC filter and swap it out if necessary. The technician will also check its minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating along with your system capacity. If you can use a filter with a higher MERV, you can achieve better air quality. It will also help keep dust and other particles out of your system.
2. Clean the Condenser Coil
The condenser coil is outdoors where it can collect a lot of grime over time. Your technician will clean the condenser unit of leaves and other debris. Routine maintenance also includes using coil cleaners to clean the coil and improve your system’s efficiency. It may also be necessary to clear the area around the outdoor unit. The general recommendation is a 2-foot perimeter free of grass, bushes, and overhanging branches.
3. Clean the Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil is indoors. It’s necessary to clean it with coil cleaner to remove accumulated grime. It’s the most important AC and heat pump component when it comes to your monthly cooling costs. Your technician will also inspect the fins and check for biological growth.
4. Test the Thermostat
Your technician will remove the thermostat faceplate and clean the electrical contacts. The next step is to test the thermostat, including ensuring temperature accuracy. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, our technician can also answer any questions you may have about scheduling it.
5. Test Static Air Pressure
Once we’ve thoroughly inspected and cleaned your system, we’ll run it. The final test involves using a manometer to ensure that static air pressure is in the acceptable range.
